No way he hasn’t used an iPhone. We’re talking about the guy that developed the iPod. The guy that worked in product development at Apple for years. He’s used an iPhone.

As far as the other comments go, Palm isn’t getting sued by Apple. They made that threat almost a year ago, and they still haven’t filed it? It ain’t happening. In fact, Palm responded to Apple’s initial threat with something like “Palm has the tools necessary to defend itself.” Engadget wrote a really good article on the whole topic last year (http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/28/apple-vs-palm-the-in-depth-analysis/).

Just a thought.

I’m sure he has had the iPhone extensively demoed to him and he’s held it and played around with it for days at a time –but he’s never “used it” as in stopped using another cell phone in favor of the iPhone because he doesn’t like it. The interviewer was an idiot and commenting on what an idiot does is, well…

I think this was all done for publicity. I think the whole iTunes sync fiasco was just for publicity too. Tons of free mentions for an interview that otherwise would not have been but a footnote.

Actually, I think Rubinstein is distancing himself from the iPhone given the (very real) possibility of them being sued by Apple.

I recall someone, somewhere, at Apple saying they would defend their intellectual property in the mobile space, namely their multitouch paradigms and what have you – when the pre had just come out.

I would say he’s being cautious.

Meh… I’m really not sure this story is that huge a deal since pretty much everyone at Palm has actually used one, not to mention the fact that lots of Palm’s engineers were copped from Apple… they most certainly know what an iPhone is. So this business that “oh, Mr. Rubinstein you MUST touch the Jesus Phone in order to know what works” is hogwash.

In other words, don’t think for one minute just because of his quote that webOS devices are being “created in a vacuum.”

… Personally? I don’t believe him.
